The Utah Council for the Social Studies is hosting their 2nd annual "Morning at the Movies". On January 14, 10:00 a.m. at Jordan Commons we are showing The War Horse, which is a story set during WWI. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it has gotten great reviews and should be a good experience for teachers. The movie will be preceeded by a short discussion on WWI by John Reid of the U of U. Concessions will be open and popcorn, drinks, candy and etc. can be purchased.

If UCSS members want to attend, they should email Dawn at dlhauser@graniteschools.org to hold tickets. Each member gets 2 free tickets. All others can send $5 per ticket to Dawn and pick them up outside the theatre.

Hope to see lots of you there!

See for yourself what people in the community, who have been a part of this project, have been saying about it.

The strenuous nature of this trip has convinced me that I can accomplish difficult things. I will help my teachers develop the same attitude as they take on differentiation and new teaching strategies. I understand on a deeper level what it means to do history rather than just teach history. I will inspire my teachers to make their lessons as close to authentic as possible as students debate facts and support their thinking with primary sources. Thank you. I am so grateful

Sincerely,

Edith Lang

I had the great opportunity of attending the Lewis and Clark Miller field study. What an incredible experience it was! Not only did I learn so much- but the history came alive! I look forward to returning to the classroom and transferring my experiences on this trip and knowledge to my students. I realize that there are many great causes and projects that you can choose to contribute to and support; and I am personally grateful that you choose to support the Miller Education Project. I have had the opportunity to experience history in ways that will never be forgotten. Thanks again so much for the contribution and the opportunity!

Sincerely,

Kim Jex

Thank you for making the Miller Education Program possible. This has been one of the best and most memorable learning experiences. Often, teachers are the worst, or most difficult, students; but on this trip I saw 31 teachers come together and create a lasting impression on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Thank you,

Zach Bioteau

We canoed on the Netul River right by Fort Clatsop. It was just a couple of hours, but I had to take my canoe, gloves, and other things. You know...just HAD to.

The park guide was pretty good, she would pull us into quiet parts of the river and tell us about L & C. It was so interesting because she told it like it happened all at once or near the mouth of the Columbia. Me? I'm sitting there seeing all the real places in my mind. WOW! It was cool! And to fill in the holes with my daughters was really great, too!

We stayed up in Long Beach, WA where Clark managed to walk to during their wintering.

I LOVE feeling so smart!
